Grade 3-7 A book even the smallest libraries will want to consider. This title covers the basics and more: stables and pastures; feeding; grooming tools, techniques, and routines; fitting and caring for tack; traveling safely; and health care. The in-depth hints and tips are the kind most often gleaned from people with years of experience with horses (soaking a full haynet in water for a while helps those horses with dust allergies and breathing problems; human sunscreen can be applied to the noses of pink-nosed animals to prevent sunburn). A spread on shoeing demystifies this oft-neglected topic and examines types of shoes and farriers' tools, and provides 15 photographs chronicling the removal of an old shoe and the fitting of a new one. The text is clear even when addressing topics that may be unfamiliar to readers with no background on the subject. Sharp, colorful photographs portray useful, if not always the cleanest and most beautiful aspects of equine care. This book effectively conveys what most do not-the amount of hard work involved in caring for these creatures. The inviting layout features plenty of white space with text artfully interspersed with relevant illustrative material. An excellent offering. -Lisa Falk, Los Angeles Public Library

Gr. 4-7. Children who have a horse or want one will find a good deal of information in this attractive, photo-rich book. There are clear instructions on everything from washing and clipping a pony, to exercise routines and caring for pastureland. The book's layout is superb: lots of insets, blocks of straightforward text, and pictures of kids of various ages taking care of horses. The full-color photos are well composed, fully captioned, and quite thorough. In the section on different kinds of feed, for example, nine types of concentrated feed are pictured, along with advice on which type would be best for a particular horse. There's also a special equation to help a caregiver determine how much feed a pony needs. A thorough, thoughtfully executed resource. Shelley Townsend-Hudson
