Designed to be a starting place for young researchers and browsers alike, this reference tool explains topics relating to the "people, places, and events that have shaped the United States." Students ages 9-12 and their families will find the details sufficient but not overwhelming. More than 1,200 entries are arranged alphabetically and range in length from one paragraph to two pages. Entries are illustrated throughout with more than 2,000 full-color photographs, illustrations, diagrams, charts, time lines, and maps. Each entry includes an icon that identifies it as belonging to one of 12 subject areas, among them animals, geography, history, religion, and science.
Expanded "Special Feature" entries treat more than 100 topics, such as Art, Birds of North America, and Westward movement. State entries present excellent starting points for school reports by providing basic information in two-page spreads with fact boxes, symbols, places of interest, and maps. Similar elements are found in one-page entries on Canadian provinces. One-page presidential biographies include fact boxes and portraits Fact boxes throughout the encyclopedia provide historical dates, statistics and figures, and other important data and are complemented by sidebars that are highlighted in yellow and offer interesting nuggets of information (for example, in 1850 the average farmer could grow only enough food to feed 5 people; today the average farmer can produce enough to feed almost 80 people).
Topics of current interest have been included (Iraq War, Terrorism, War on terror). However, many photographs will appear dated to young researchers. In addition, some entries have not been updated to reflect current information. For example, Basketball makes no mention of the WNBA, and Seattle lists the city still being the headquarters of Boeing.
Fully cross-referenced, the encyclopedia concludes with a comprehensive index as well as a subject index. Students will find this tool useful, and school and public libraries will want to purchase both reference and circulating copies. Shauna Yusko
