Reviews

This interactive book introduces children to the “amazing machine that works nonstop all of your life”—aka your body. Accompanied by energetic illustrations with playful, multicultural children, eight double-page spreads cover such general topics as bones and muscles, the heart, lungs, skin, nutrients and waste, and the senses. The text is broken up into small, easily digestible nuggets of information with glossary words highlighted in bold. The section on nutrients and waste, for example, offers portions on the mouth, saliva, the stomach, the esophagus, the intestines, and germs. What little hands will appreciate most, however, are opening the related flaps that feature additional facts and illustrations. For instance, after reading about blood vessels, children can lift the flap of a soccer player to see his interior arteries and veins, or after reading about the diaphragm, they can the lift the flap of a singer to see this muscle in action. Thick, sturdy board-book-type pages ensure enjoyment from multiple readers. Grades K-3. --Angela Leeper
