9780753802526: Some Intellectual Consequences of the English Revolution (Phoenix Giants)

Synopsis

Scholars and students of Tudor-Stuart and English revolutionary history will welcome this provocative commentary by an eminent English historian on some crucial problems of English history and intellectual thought. In a previous book, The Intellectual Origins of the English Revolution (1965), Christopher Hill looked at the sources of the radical outburst which resulted in regicide and a new political and social states. Although not meant as a companion volume, this later interpretative essay suggests a direction for studying the aftermath of the English Revolution.Hill asks a question about the basic nature of the was it a restoration of the intellectual, economic, social, and moral values that prevailed before the Interregnum, as well as a restoration to the monarchy? Or did the tremendous upheaval of radical ideas and actions result in any lasting changes?Hill's hypothesis is that the currents of reform and the intellectual and religious freedom of the Cromwell years did not simply disappear, as is often thought, but rather continued to influence the course of English and American history, literature, and thought, intellectual and social attitudes, assumptions, and prejudices, in subtle and pervasive ways. Both England's 18th- and 19th-century world supremacy and its 20th-century decline, he feels, are related to what happened and did not happen during the English Revolution.[Originally delivered as a series of Merle Curti lectures at the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1976].

About the Author

Christopher Hill (1912–2003) was master of Balliol College, Oxford. His many books include God’s Englishman, The World Turned Upside Down, and Change and Continuity in Seventeenth-Century England.

Review

“[Hill’s] subject is the Revolution of 1640–1660 and its effects, but he ranges more generally from the transformations in English society to the latter decades of the seventeenth century as well. . . . [This] is a brief survey of a large subject, but it distills a lifetime of scholarship.”—Robert Zaller, History
