The essays selected for this volume show how relations between past, current and future generations have become a major subject of philosophical research since the 1970s. The relations between people alive today with people who may exist in the future and people now deceased, differ from relations between contemporaries and in ways that raise new conceptual, logical and substantive questions. Among the questions addressed in this volume are: what is the status of people now deceased and people who may exist in the future? Can the latter be harmed by the actions of people alive today? What duties of justice do we have towards people with whom we can neither interact nor co-operate, and can people who are indirect victims of past injustices legitimately claim compensation? Answers to these questions are relevant in a number of policy areas, most notably in issues regarding reparations for historical injustice and responding to climate change and its consequences.

About the Author:
Lukas H. Meyer is Professor of Philosophy and Head of the Department of Philosophy, University of Graz, Austria
Review:
a stimulating book ... the essays collected offer a high-quality analysis of the various problems underpinning intergenerational justice. * Antoine Verret-Hamelin, Recension DOuvrace * a comprehensive work that will be useful to all scholars with an interest in modern population ethics... the book constitutes a very significant contribution to an overall topic which - due to the fact that it is both theoretically challenging and practically highly pertinent - seems destined to constitute a continuously expanding sub-field of ethics. * Jesper Ryberg, Economics and Philosophy * I believe that this volume is indispensable reading for researchers and students working in the area of intergenerational justice. It offers a detailed description of the main philosophical approaches to intergenerational justice, revealing their respective weaknesses and strengths. * Sylvie Loriaux, Jurisprudence * Without a doubt, Intergenerational Justice opens new avenues for reflection and action, particularly on the reductions of greenhouse gas emissions and on the possibility of a perpetual constitution. The book reflects the urgent need to consider and propose solutions that can respond, even partially, to such a complex problem. * Laure Gillot-Assayag, Intergenerational Justice Review *
