'The book will be particularly useful for design historians, curators, collectors and conservators, as well as textile and interior designers' -ARLIS 'This fascinating volume rewards browsing with a broad range of entries...a very useful resource for textile artists and designers, but also will be of broad interest to historians and curious readers of European and American literature...Recommended.' -Choice From reviews of the author's previous book 'Encyclopedia of Furniture': 'This wonderful 'must have' book for designers, makers, historians and restorers is more than the encyclopedia of furniture it professes to be. It is a catalogue of social history and the human compulsion for change. Clive Edwards loves his subject, exploring it with fine scholarly research and great detail tp show how materials and techniques, their use and function, have evolved.' Jane Rapley, 'Textile History' 'An essential work of reference for furniture historians and anyone interested in the fine and decorative arts' 'Antique Dealers and Collectors Guide' From the reader's report: 'This manuscript ... has two main strengths. The first is in its combination of furnishing textiles, furnishing practices and floor coverings in a single volume, when these subjects - especially floor coverings - are generally treated as separate topics. The second strength is its range of sources consulted, the majority of which would be difficult for the general reader to obtain (being primary material or out-of-print volumes).' 'This well-produced book provides a comprensive catalogue for anyone interested in every aspect of textiles ... The cross-referencing within the text is excellent and easy to use ... The author is to be congratulated on the huge range of materials covered and the comprehensive detail of the descriptions which make this book such a useful and absorbing read for both the amateur and expert home furnishing anthusiast' - Jouranl for Weavers, Spinners and Dyers 2008 'Clive Edwards has distilled the complicated and sometimes obscure history of domestic furnsihing practices into a deftly arranged, accessibly formattted and wonderfully informative compilation ... many entries are admirably detailed and include lengthy quotations from contemporary sources ... For those interested in the history of domestic furnishings or in search of information about the materials and techniques used for floor coverings, curtains or upholstery, the Encyclopedia will be a useful introduction to the subject and to the relevant supporting literature' - Art Libraries Journal 2008 'There are numerous fascinating and illuminating observations, attesting to Dr Edwards's broad knowledge of furnishing history' - Journal of Design History 2008 ' All those absorbed by 20th-century interiors will find much of interest in [this] encyclopedia, especially for its discussion of such not-so-glamorous subjects as mattress and upholstery fillings, oilcloths, matting, underlay, webbing and blinds ... Edwards set out to produce a history in the form of a reference book and has done so. [Encylopedia of Furnishing Textiles] will enhance any library, public or private.' Crafts
