Synopsis

Nutraceutical n: a nutrient that is applied pharmaceutically The Nutraceutical Revolution is the complete low-down on the most frequently prescribed nutrients--the ones Dr. Richard Firshein finds he turns to most often in his practice; the most versatile; the safest; the ones that have shown the most promising, tangible benefits. Firshein has taken stock of the most common ailments and complaints he sees in his patients--everything from fatigue and stress to high cholesterol and sinus problems. What he has found is that he consults a core group of supplements--vitamins, herbs, minerals, amino acids, and phytochemicals--time and again to treat these various ills. That investigation has resulted in twenty chapters--one per nutrient--that explain everything you need to know about these little pills (or teas, or powders) and that enable you to design a healthy, healing regimen specifically tailored to your needs. As an added bonus, Firshein includes a final chapter that points the way to the future, outlining five "future nutrients" that are showing promising results in early research and testing.

From Publishers Weekly

Host of the weekly radio show HouseCalls and nutrition columnist for Psychology Today, Firshein practices nutritional medicine in New York City, recommending the use of nutritional supplements (which he calls nutraceuticals to indicate that they have the power of pharmaceuticals). Among them are some familiar vitamins and minerals, fish oils and soy, folk remedies such as milk thistle and black cohosh and the less familiar quercetin, tyrosine and phosphatidyl serine. Twenty such compounds are described in chapters filled with stories relating Firshein's success in treating patients with allergies, memory loss, prostate problems and other diverse conditions. A final chapter reports on newer nutraceuticals currently being researched for their potential to treat cancer, heart disease and ulcers. Dosage charts indicating the amounts to take of each supplement, either for general health or to treat specific conditions, and an alphabetical list of ailments and recommended compounds make this a handy reference for those interested in a more natural approach to healing.
