Symbolic interactionism commands its own adherents, meetings, journals, and professional organization. Now it has its own handbook. Reynolds and Herman-Kinney have assembled 44 chapters from 59 scholars to assess the past, present, and future of this key social psychological framework. In this authoritative volume, scholars outline the history of the development of the theory from the time of Cooley, Thomas, and Mead; its various schools and related theoretical models; its key concepts and methods; its relevance to key institutions and substantive areas; and its likely future trends. Together they provide a benchmark that will help shape symbolic interactionist work for the forseeable future. It is a volume that should be on the shelf of all scholars and graduate students in sociology and related social sciences.

Larry T. Reynolds is emeritus professor of sociology at Central Michigan University. He is a former president of the North Central Sociological Association, the first recipient of the Michigan Sociological Association's Charles Horton Cooley Award, and the first recipient of the ASA Marxist section's Distinguished Career Award. Among his books are The Sociology of Sociology, American Society: A Critical Analysis, and Symbolic Interactionism: Genesis, Varieties, and Criticism. Nancy J. Herman-Kinney is professor of sociology at Central Michigan University. She is editor of Deviance: A Symbolic Interactionist Approach and co-editor (with Larry T. Reynolds) of Symbolic Interactionism: An Introduction to Social Psychology.
[The authors] have produced a volume that provides a comprehensive overview of symbolic interaction's intellectual origins, its early development . . . and its relationship to kindred theoretical camps. One inescapable conclusion is that symbolic interaction is a far more diffused and varied enterprise today as compared to its early years. (P. Kivisto Choice Reviews Online May 2004)
