Jane Murdock doesn't believe in magic, wizards, or any other matters arcane, but that doesn't stop her from running afoul a wizard and feeling the full brunt of the old adage: Hell hath no fury like a wizard scorned. Will, an untried wizard, is only trying to take wizard-order brides back to his home world when he, too, finds trouble can wear a beautiful face. The trouble can be very bad, for him and the brides, especially when the pretty face belongs to the evil, love-struck wizard Cordelia, who has been scorned by unicorn rancher, Max Farrel. Cursed and forced to wander the worlds as a great silvery-eyed cat, Sojourner was once a man and a wizard, but he can never regain his human shape until he finds That Which Was Lost.

Magic, wizards and sorcerers create an alternate world, reminiscent of the early West in America. Sojourner, a black leopard-like cat, is really a dark, handsome sorcerer under the spell of Cordelia, a much-feared wizard. Parker reads this 1998 Sapphire Award Winner, full of love, magic and wizardry, with bright, bell-like tones. She portrays Jane, a '90s New York businesswoman transported magically into the alternative world, with cold logic, until Sojourner entrances her. Parker draws listeners into the characters and delivers a stellar performance contrasting feelings and reason. She delivers this Cinderella story from the prince's point of view with pleasant, easy-to-follow narration. Jane Murdock is a business executive focused on her career. After learning her secretary is quitting to become a mail-order bride for an alternate world, Jane demands to meet the "wizard" arranging the multidimensional trip. Confident of exposing a sleazy scam artist, Jane is shocked when she's actually transported to the magical Great Northwest. Juanita Parker reads with enthusiasm as she brings to life an unusual world where unicorn rancher Max Farrel has spurned the beautiful wizard Cordelia, resulting in dire consequences for the entire frontier. Parker is particularly effective in her portrayal of Jane, a rude, pragmatic, loud-mouth New Yorker who may hold the key to saving both a man and a country from the curse of evil wizards. This engrossing tale of love and magic is highly recommended for fantasy collections. As a 1998 Sapphire Award winner, it's also a good choice for the romance section.ASusan Dunman, Murray State Univ., KY
