As cool as classic muscle cars might be, they're only as good as the automotive technology of their era. That's where this book comes in. With clear, easy-to-follow instructions, this guide shows how to give your car all the muscle of today while preserving the classic styling of your muscle car.
In this updated and fully illustrated edition of his popular handbook, veteran overhauler and automotive writer Jason Scott takes readers through the step-by-step improvements that will add more power, style, and handling capability to any classic muscle car.
Full-color photos accompany Scott's detailed instructions, covering bodywork and interior restoration, engine enhancements, transmission and axle swaps, suspension, steering, chassis and brake upgrades as well as many other changes that will restore-or maintain-a muscle cars identity while making it perform as if it were built only yesterday.

This book grew out of my love for classic muscle car styling and power but the recognition that huge strides have been made in automotive technology since the 1960s. Even back then, few folks kept their muscle cars completely stock -- folks bolted on Cragar S/S or Torque Thrust wheels with 50-series rubber in the back, added air shocks and "Cherry Bomb" mufflers. These were all primitive (and now nostalgic) upgrades, intended to improve performance.
This book is intended to point out the various ways in which vintage muscle cars can be fitted with modern components and technology to improve them, all without significantly altering the rugged, muscular appearances that draw us to these cars in the first place.
And while I show and discuss a number of possible upgrades in the book, those are a snapshot of what was available at the time the book was being written. Knowing that many more options would eventually become available, I wrote the book to explain what to think about and look for in an upgrade, so that it would still apply today, with an abundance of new options that weren't even envisioned just a few short years ago.
In the end, I hope you find the book interesting and inspiring. This is still one of my favorite books to flip through when dreaming up what to do to any of many various muscle cars. I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I do.
And I'd love to read your feedback in the reviews sections, as well as any suggestions or requests that you might have, which might help shape a second edition.
Powerful, exciting, and stylish, muscle cars are great fun to restore and drive. But as cool as they already are, you can improve your classic muscle car by adding even more power, style, and handling.
Automotive technology has rocketed forward since the last true muscle cars rolled off assembly lines in the early 1970s. To extract the full potential of your muscle car today you need to “restify” it. Restification is a combination of restoration and modification; in essence, it’s a high-performance restoration.
High-performance restorations incorporate modern upgrades and enhancements to improve performance, convenience, styling and even safety. How To Rebuild and Modify Your Muscle Car shows you how it’s done using easy-to-understand explanations and step-by-step photography.
From converting old drum brakes to fast-stopping discs, to swapping carbs for electronic fuel injection, this is the ultimate guide to making your muscle car go faster, stop quicker, and handle better, while making it look as good as the day it left the factory.
