In the early 1890s a farmer named w. J. JamIeson hand-buIlt a selfpropelled truck that was powered by a Charter engine he had lying around. The machine was gear-driven and, due to his lack of understanding of how gears worked, it ran backward. He gave up in disgust and sent a letter to the Charter Engine Company suggesting that if they could figure out how to make a contraption like this work, he’d buy one. They did, and the machine they built was one of the first self-propelled gas farm tractors. We don’t know precisely what drove Jamieson to build his backward-running rig. It may have been an obstinate mule or a string of rainy days that left him working in the barn. We can be pretty sure that he wasn’t trying to create art.

The means of the people who built the first successful farm tractors were far greater than those of our man Jamieson.

  • These were people determined to make their mark at a time when technology was changing life in ways we can’t even comprehend. The problems we face dealing with the latest OS on an iPhone, for example, are more subtle than the raw challenges encountered by turn-of-the-century innovators. The concept of internal combustion was as exotic to the populace as time travel is to us today.

Those early designers were better educated than Jamieson, but they were no more interested in art.

Only after the Model D appeared in 1920s did Deere and Company begin to develop a look for their tractors.

In the 1930s the general public, not just design wonks, became enchanted with styled vehicles. Deere hired Henry Dreyfuss to help style their Model A and B tractors.

Despite the fact that engineers and stylists are an acrimonious match in the best of times, Dreyfuss was a perfect fit for John Deere.

Dreyfuss is the man given the most credit for the designs chosen here, but the designs you see on these pages resulted from more than a century of design and evolution, from the work of thousands of men and women striving to create a proper tool for the farmer.

So here are objects that have outlived their intended purpose—their only remaining purpose is objectification. The monetary value of these tractors may be spurred by nostalgic collectors, but their cultural currency is equally high. They resulted from millions of man hours logged by some of the world’s brightest and best minds.

About the Author:
