Kindergarten-Grade 2?A group of monsters get together and have a contest to find out who is the scariest. After the Warlock, Hag, Vampire, Banshee, and Ogre try to frighten the many others, there is a knock at the castle door and a group of trick-or-treaters scare the real monsters away. The mirror on the last page suggests that the winner of the contest might be the reader. The story is told in verse that usually flows well. The text is gross enough to please children, especially when the Witch "...cackled while her runny nose/Dripped upon her moldy toes and/Plucked her hairy warts at those/Who claimed that she would lose." The cartoonlike, detailed illustrations are filled with humorous monsters, bugs, and bats. If your library needs some new books for Halloween, this one is a fun addition.?Elisabeth Palmer Abarbanel, Los Angeles Public Library
