PreS-Gr 1--Crisp full-color photos on white backgrounds illustrate these phonetics-based easy readers. In Dan and Dan, a white boy lovingly describes his relationship with his grandfather and namesake. My Pal Al features a black girl describing her favorite stuffed animal. Both books have large print, short words, and a text designed to reinforce vowel sounds and consonant blends. The rhyming narratives read well and carry readers through the books. An afterword explains the phonetic concepts to adults and gives advice on reading together. A welcome new series for the earliest readers.
