Review:

"Crickets and grasshoppers can be told apart by the lengths of their antennae; in the first book, readers also learn that crickets can make their songs with their right or left wings. Learning the differences between reptiles and amphibians is easy in Gecko. Whether their skins are rough and dry (reptiles) or smooth and moist (amphibians), both geckos and salamanders can lose their tails to hungry predators and grow new ones. The world's two largest birds, the nine-foot-tall ostrich and the six-foot emu, live on different continents and lead very different lives. The third book compares and contrasts them on each spread. All three titles are filled with sharp, colorful photographs with engaging close-ups of special characteristics, e.g., the grasshopper's abdomen-located 'ear' vs. the cricket's on its front legs. Each book has a test called 'Who Am I?' to see if readers can identify the animals described in the text. 'Fun Facts” add more information.' --School Library Journal

"Each book in this exciting new series takes two similar animals and does an exceptional job of comparing and contrasting their features and lives. The books are full of interesting photographs presented side by side, highlighting the attributes that make each animal special. Along with the accompanying text there are colorful captions focusing on a certain feature of each animal. The many close-up photographs give the reader an excellent perspective of the features that make each animal special and different from the other. The books end with a 'Who Am I?' page, and a 'Fun Facts' page. This series is a wonderful way to capture the attention of the young scientist." --Library Media Connection

"Varied close-up and annotated photographs point out the many differences between the two largest species of birds on earth, in various categories such as habitat, physiology, and reproductive habits. Although the layout is colorful, it’s a little busy, but nature fans won’t mind." --The Horn Book Guide

"Kids are always going to capture bugs in jars and chase lizards into the weeds, not because they're cruel but because they're curious. The Animal Look-Alikes series funnels this curiosity into teachable moments by providing young ones with the tools to look at these animals with a scientific eye. As is typical for the Lightning Bolt brand, the pages are a panoply of primary-color backgrounds, with colorful text creatively arranged around vivid pictures. Can You Tell a Cricket from a Grasshopper? is the most helpful title, because there's plenty of these insects around for kids to scrutinize. How long are those antennas? Do they sing at day or during the night? Can You Tell a Gecko from a Salamander? compares skin and egg formation and drops some shocking similarities, too. (Both can detach their tails!) Can You Tell an Ostrich from an Emu? isn't a question likely to come up in real life (one lives in Africa, the other in Australia), but anyway: count their toes or evaluate their wing span to make a judgment. Structural consistency―keeping one animal on the left page, the other on the right―would have helped with clarity, but these are enjoyable lessons nonetheless, and the 'Who Am I?' quizzes included in the back matter are especially apropos." --Booklist
