PreS. Bookworms, a new umbrella, leveled reading program series, incorporates several subseries. Big small, part of Bookworms Just the Opposite group, is for the newest readers. The small, square trim size makes the book easy for small hands to hold, and the idea is presented very straightforwardly, with text (five words per page) in bold, very large type. On the left-hand page a girl unwraps a large present: "My present is big." Opposite is a photo of a smiling younger boy holding a smaller package: "Your present is small." The idea is repeated throughout the book with other familiar objects--ice-cream cones, beds, bikes. Words for these different things are simply plugged into the sentence. The photographs occasionally seem a bit overexposed but generally do a good job of visualizing the idea. The reappearance of some images in a picture-keyed glossary will help little ones add new words to their reading and spelling vocabularies. Along with a successful reading experience, this will give children a firm grasp of how words and pictures work together at the most basic level. Stephanie Zvirin
