Grade 6–8—These titles were adapted from the "Food and Fitness" series to make them more accessible to struggling readers. Capturing a straightforward tone appropriate for younger teens, the authors cover the basics of nutrition and apply the same evenhandedness to the more specialized topics of eating disorders, weight management, and nutrition for athletes. Useful and easy-to-follow tips featured as boxed inserts, like how to calculate Body Mass Index (BMI), and "do and don't" sections for weight control are included. The information is current but presented in the broadest, matter-of-fact strokes. For example, the recommended percentage of complex carbohydrates, protein, and liquids one should eat before a sporting event is listed, but not specific foods. This makes the series as a whole better suited for reports than for self-interest.—Joanna K. Fabicon, Los Angeles Public Library
