Utopia on Wheels is a readable, interesting, and accessible introduction to contemporary social issues and theories. Through an exploration of the Green Tortoise, a San Francisco travel company that is dedicated to counter-culture adventures, McGettigan uses three separate journeys as a means to examine the relationship between self and society. In this manner, he provides an entry-point for mass audiences to consider important sociological issues including the nature of social power, the problem of social order, and the ways in which individuals may produce change in a global society.

From the Author:

This book contains the tale of a journey. The journey is split up into a number of segments because it took place at several different times and places. Nevertheless, each of the segments comprises an essential part of the same journey. What unites each of these separate journeys is that, during the course of each, I was searching for the solution to a knotty theoretical problem: I was trying to figure out how to define the concept, power. People have been talking about power for a long time, but no one has ever come up with a wholly satisfactory definition. In fact, instead of producing satisfaction, most attempts at defining power end up causing arguments. While I cannot promise that my own definition will avoid stirring up additional controversy, still, in the pages that follow I have attempted to advance a definition of power that overcomes many longstanding theoretical logjams.
Although I have endeavored to explore a variety of complex theoretical problems, I have also worked hard to ensure that this book remains as readable as possible. Sociological texts can have a tendency to be rather dry - to say the least. Thus, important as the ideas contained within such texts may be, they are often communicated only to the most diehard of enthusiasts. In this book, it has been my goal to tell an entertaining story as I also examine and advance theory. Consequently, I would like to welcome readers who are interested primarily in the Green Tortoise and who do not care in the least about the challenges of doing sociological theory. The Green Tortoise provides an unusual travel "adventure" that is worthy of much commentary. While I have injected regular allusions to theoretical issues in my tales of the Green Tortoise, the demands upon readers through the first five chapters should be nominal. However, I have reserved chapter six for a relatively dense theoretical discussion. Readers who are interested primarily in learning about the Green Tortoise might consider hopping off the bus at the close of chapter five. On the other hand, those who are interested in the implications of the first five chapters for sociological theory should stay tuned. In chapter six, I reveal a resolution to the "paradox" of defining power that also establishes a basis upon which to transcend a variety of other intractable theoretical debates. No matter how you choose to read the book, I wish you a pleasant journey through the adventures that follow.
Bon voyage.
