9780762423408: Wisdom For A High School Grad

Following his hit title Wisdom for a Young CEO, 18-year-old author Douglas Barry shares advice he received from more than 200 diverse respondents to the letter he sent out after his high school graduation, in which he asked, “What should I get out of college?” Those who wrote back to him—including George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, John F. Kerry, Regis Philbin, Ken Burns (documentarist), Harley Jane Kozak (author), the Dalai Lama, John Travolta, and more—offer touching, practical, and humorous wisdom about life in college. Their advice covers making friends, finding one’s path in life, learning and understanding new subjects, striving for awards and honors, the value of traveling, living away from home for the first time, dating, socializing, and more. As a lead title for the spring graduation market, Wisdom For a High School Grad is the only compilation of original advice from contemporary leaders in a variety of fields, speaking to a universal question. With entertaining, enlightening contributions from a range of accomplished adults including athletes, educators, musicians, politicians, astronauts, bankers, and comedians, this is a book with relevance to every high-school graduate facing the challenges that come with college life.

About the Author:

Douglas Barry attends Tulane University. He wrote, Wisdom for a Young CEO, when he was 14-years old.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 10 Up–Not just another book of inspiring quotes for high school graduates, this one personalizes and pens the insecurities, fears, anticipation, excitement, and enthusiasm of a soon-to-be freshman at Tulane University. Not afraid to ask for advice, Barry went straight to the top by writing to George W. Bush, the Dalai Lama, John Kerry, Bill Gates, and even Kermit the Frog. Most of the advice given is familiar, yet the sources from which it comes are successful, proven men and women of the world. Included are excerpts from a graduation speech given by Bono at the University of Pennsylvania, letters from Bob Dole and Kenny Rogers, and quotes from President Lyndon B. Johnson and Maya Angelou about growing up, coping with change, and catapulting toward the future. This introspective young man's honesty about his uncertainty and fear of the unknown will resonate with all new or soon-to-be graduates. An index helps locate quotes by particular individuals.–Julie Webb, Shelby County High School, Shelbyville, KY
