A beautiful new book about being a new big sister or brother, by the renowned creators of HAPPY BIRTH DAY!, IT'S PERFECTLY NORMAL, and IT'S SO AMAZING!
How does it feel to have a brand-new baby in the family—especially if you are still very young yourself?
With enormous warmth and empathy, the acclaimed and award-winning author-illustrator team Robie H. Harris and Michael Emberley tell the universal story of the real feelings young children experience when, suddenly, they are no longer the baby. With exquisite and tender portraits, HI NEW BABY! assures all of us that older siblings are still loved and cherished, and always will be.
"I was never as tiny as that new baby!" you said.
"You were that tiny," I told you, "but that was a
long time ago."
"I don't remember when I was a baby," you said.
"Oh, you were the most WONDERFUL baby!" I said.
"But now you're a big kid . . . Now you're
our big kid."
"I'm not that big!"

Robie H. Harris says the memory of the day her second child was born inspired HI NEW BABY! "When my older child met his new baby brother, he was full of feelings—excitement and disappointment when he finally saw the baby, surprise that the new baby was so tiny, upset when the baby cried, bored when the baby slept, angry that he was no longer the baby, and proud when he realized that he could make the baby stop crying. This was another story, like HAPPY BIRTH DAY!, that my children—who are now best friends—loved hearing."
Michael Emberley says, "After carpeting my studio floor with hundreds of sketches in my struggle to capture the complex emotions of the young girl in this book, I think I finally know what must have been going on in my sister's mind on the day I was born." Michael Emberley's art for HI NEW BABY! features the same family that readers meet in HAPPY BIRTH DAY!
Ages 4-8. The glorious team responsible for It's So Amazing! (1999) and Happy Birth Day! (1996) has created a tender, real story of a little girl's first meeting with her new baby brother. Dad tells what happened, relating it as if he were recounting a favorite family story. He gently reminds his daughter that she didn't like the baby's cries or when he peed and spat up and that she tried to take his little cap and be the baby again. Through it all, parents and grandparents are seen as calm and reassuring. They tell her that she is a big sister, and big sisters are big enough to hold the baby. When she finally does, he falls asleep. Emberley's realistic oil-pastel pictures are utterly wonderful. A slightly balding dad, a round-faced mom, the little girl, the baby, and the grandparents are seen mostly in tight close-ups, a genuine kid's eye view: Mom nurses while she munches a pickle; the grandparents change the drooling infant. The emotions on the faces, from bemusement to fear to anger to delight, are rendered with pitch-perfect precision. Pair this with Kevin Henkes' Julius, the Baby of the World (1990) for a siblingfest of reassurance and joy. GraceAnne DeCandido
