PreS-Compilations that combine simple stories and rhymes from previously published sources. The selections appear on two-page spreads and range from board-book stories, e.g., Vivian French's Lullaby Lion (1998) in Bedtime, to rhymes with illustrations taken from other titles, such as Rosemary Wells's "Wee Willie Winkie" from My Very First Mother Goose (1996), to artwork that has been adapted or given new text. For example, Zita Newcome's charming illustrations from Toddlerobics (1996, all Candlewick) accompany the familiar words to "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" in Playtime. However, compressing an entire book into two pages makes the illustrations too small for the intended audience and confuses the sequence of the stories. Still, the overall success of the books makes up for these shortcomings, as the selections and bright colors are perfect for this age group. Even the size, slightly larger than most board books, seems just right for little hands. Attractive choices for libraries that serve infants and toddlers.-Kathleen M.
