Susan Wojciechowski, a former children’s librarian, has written numerous books for children. She says that BEANY GOES TO CAMP was inspired by her daughter Mary’s camp experiences when she was nine or ten. "Mary hated camp and wrote many letters home detailing the reasons why," the author explains. "I kept those letters because they were so funny, and now, after all that time, they still make me laugh."From School Library Journal:
Grade 2-4-Another beginning chapter book about Bernice Sherwin-Hendricks, better known as Beany. She loves the relaxing, don't-have-to-do-anything of summer vacation and isn't interested in going away to camp, even though her friend Carol Ann loved Camp Onondaga. Then her parents announce that Beany is going for a week and readers follow her as she leaves (very much against her will), meets her bunkmates and cabin counselor, and learns the routine. Beany helps a homesick bunkmate, Skye, and the two campers swim, help the cook, and participate in other activities. This is an enjoyable book for children just beyond easy-readers. The characters are not much more than two-dimensional figures and it's fairly obvious that Beany will end up loving camp by the end of the week, but her friendship with Skye, her consideration for others, and her experiences make this an appealing read. An enjoyable addition, illustrated with numerous black-and-white line drawings.
