Following a short description of yogas origins, the author instructs on poses, or asanas, and shows how each pose imitates nature. She then instructs on using each asana as a way of relaxation and a posture for meditation. Illustrations show how to achieve each asana, what not to do, and how to know the asana is being performed correctly. Ener-Chi Books, written especially for teens, present ideas and exercises that both energize a girls body and soothe her spirit. The books take inspiration from a variety of Asian practices and exercises thus, the suffix chi, a Chinese term that denotes internal physical and spiritual bodily energy. Ener-Chi Books feature clear, easy-to-follow directions and illustrations that are both clever and instructive, all presented in full color.

So next time you feel like you want to stretch your body, soothe your mind, and get energized all at the same time, find a quiet spot and just say, “om.”
Jeanne Finestone, a yoga practitioner for over 15 years, teaches at the Integral Yoga Institute in New York City.
Gr. 8-11. This slim, helpful guide to Hatha yoga, written by a longtime yoga instructor, offers a fine starting point for teens interested in beginning a practice. Introductory chapters explain terminology and offer tips about clothing, breathing, and routines, as well as some cautionary advice (consult a physician before starting). The following pages describe, in simple, friendly language, how to move in and out of various poses. Unfortunately, the cleanly drawn illustrations often picture only one phase of the pose, rather than each step, as many other yoga books do. Still, Finestone's explanations are clear and accessible, and her final section about practicing yoga during menstruation is vital information that's unusual in a yoga book for youth. A glossary concludes this solid entry in the Ener-Chi series of titles about well-being, which are aimed at a teen audience. Gillian Engberg
