Chapter 1: Understanding the Software Development Process In This Chapter *

Reviewing the phases of a software project *

Getting along with sales and marketing *

Relating to customer support As far as I know, you can't get a degree in software project management, at least not yet. The mantle of project manager usually falls to an experienced code writer/software developer. So chances are good that before you begin to manage software projects, you already have a firm grasp on the technical issues involved in the development and coding of software (if not, I explain enough of the central concepts throughout this book to help you fake that you at least have a clue). Software project management, however, requires more than an understanding of data models, user interface principles, and the difference between an elegant algorithm and a complete kludge. You also need major-project-management skills, and more to the point, software project-management skills. You may be the best darned code writer in your company, but at the same time, you may be completely lost when it comes to estimating and managing the myriad details and parallel processes involved in a software project. Don't worry! This book provides you with a first-aid kit of software project-management tools that enable you to successfully manage a software project right from the get-go! This chapter presents you with a high-level overview of the entire software-development process. You also get a glance at the activities that occur after the software project has been completed and the product goes out the door to the customers. So, grind some Java beans for a fresh mug and hop to it! The Seven Phases of Software Projects Join me in a trip to the dawn of cyber-time, to a time when the Y2K bug was first being coded into RAM-starved programs, when men still wore white lab coats in air-conditioned rooms and fed cards to dinosaur-like mainframe computers, and when Homebrew Club hackers burned the midnight ale in front of kit computers. ...
