Step by step, Stevenson teaches the basics of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and (to a limited extent) Access. Novice Office users will find that the binding makes it easy to keep pages open while typing, making this a valuable desktop buddy. The author's simple prose and clear procedures walk the reader through common tasks such as indenting paragraphs in Word or adding headers to Excel files, and her frequent use of illustrations with abundant call-outs provides visual learners with the clues they need. Even smaller elements in a screen shot, such as drop-down list boxes, are called out in separate enlarged graphics, making it less likely to get lost in feature-rich interfaces.
The author covers tasks ranging from the extremely elementary (how to run programs via the Start button) to the fairly complicated (how to perform a mail merge in Word). Throughout, the exercises refer liberally to the companion CD-ROM, which contains sample files with data to manipulate. --David WallAbout the Author:
