Kazuyuki Ohtsu (Japanese, b. 1935) served for four decades as assistant to Kiyoshi Saito, a woodblock artist at the forefront of the sosaku hanga (creative print) movement. As illustrated by the twelve lovely, serene images presented here, Ohtsu's compositions often juxtapose a botanical element in the foreground with planes of color that lead into the background. For subjects he takes us to parks and still waters, occasionally rural villages and temples. His colors are elemental, deep, and true--expressive without drama.
