Goodkind was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, where he also attended art school, one of his many interests on the way to becoming a writer. Besides a career in wildlife art, he has been a cabinet maker and violin maker, and he has done restoration work on rare and exotic artifacts from around the world -- each with its own story to tell, he says.

In the concluding novel to his epic fantasy series, Goodkind ties up most of the plot threads while leaving some open for possible later exploration. Like much of the series, this volume is dominated by diatribes on the evils of socialism and religion. Despite this, listeners will be drawn into the complex plot twists and the final battle between Richard Rahl and Emperor Jagang. Sam Tsoutsouvas compels listeners through the story with a deep, stern voice that perceptibly softens when speaking the dialogue of women and children.
