9780765620477: Chronologies of Modern Terrorism

Concise yet comprehensive, this one-volume reference examines the history of terrorism in the modern world, including its origins and development, and terrorist acts by groups and individuals from the French Revolution to today. Organized thematically and regionally, it outlines major developments in conflicts that involved terrorism, the history of terrorist groups, key aspects of counterterrorist policy, and specific terrorist incidents.Initial chapters explore terrorism as a social force, and analyze the use of terrorism as a political tool, both historically and in the contemporary world. Subsequent chapters focus on different parts of the world and consider terrorism as a part of larger disputes. Each chapter begins with a historical introduction and analysis of the topic or region, followed by one or more chronologies that trace events within political and social contexts. A glossary, selected bibliography, and detailed index are also included.

From Booklist:

Since 9/11, the topic of terrorism seems to dominate our public discourse. Although this issue has spawned innumerable books, journal articles, and conferences about its causes, tactics, and goals, students and scholars researching this massive subject also need easy-to-find factual information on incidents around the world. This work provides very brief descriptions on many terrorist attacks from 1586 to 2006. The chapters contain short background information and are arranged by region, historical period, and type of movement. The book concludes with a glossary on major terrorist groups and an unannotated select bibliography. Unfortunately, the index is also very selective, and many entries in the text are not cited. Needless to say, the enormous number of terrorist incidents from early modern times to the present precludes a comprehensive chronological reference source. The Rand Corporation, a think tank, has published several lists covering short time periods; the U.S. State Department Web site provides a chronology of attacks against American government officials and citizens from 1961 to 2003. The Rubins’ Chronologies provides broader coverage and might help in finding the dates of specific incidents in countries around the world, although a diligent researcher may need to use several chronologies to document a study. Recommended for larger libraries. --Donald Altschiller
