Describes emergencies that occurred during several space missions, including Apollo 13, Friendship 7, Gemini 8, and Mir

Grade 4-6-Cole presents crisply dramatic accounts of four mishaps in space: the explosion aboard Apollo 13; the loose heat shield on John Glenn's Friendship 7; the malfunctioning thruster that put Gemini 8 into a dizzying spin; and the 1997 collision of a resupply vehicle with the Mir space station. The photos are small and tend to be over- or underexposed, but this is a minor flaw here; readers will be caught up in the suspenseful situations and will come away appreciating the coolness with which the astronauts met their challenges. These incidents all had (relatively) happy endings. For a look at some of the space program's more tragic moments, steer readers toward Carmen Bredeson's Our Space Program (Millbrook, 2000) or Elaine Landau's Space Disasters (Watts, 2000).
