Grade 7 Up-Spangenburg and Moser state that everyone is bombarded with propaganda every day. The authors define the term, show how it is used in various situations, and suggest ways in which people can test information for accuracy and defend themselves against unwanted persuasion. Although the definition is broad, many of the examples are of military propaganda used during the World Wars. The section on the language of propaganda gives excellent definitions of terms ("bandwagon," "misleading with numbers," "glittering generalities") and methods ("appeal to emotion," "personal attack," "straw man") used to sway an audience's thinking. The chapter on ways to protect oneself from daily propaganda is enlightening. The black-and-white photos are uneven in their usefulness and clarity, and two of the five books in the list for further reading are over 10 years old. John Dunn's Advertising (Lucent, 1996) and Nancy Day's Advertising: Information or Manipulation? (Enslow, 1999) take a different approach to the topic and are for a slightly older audience. If there is a need for information solely on propaganda for this age group, this book may fill the bill.
