From Booklist:
Gr. 6-9. This entry in the Decades of the 20th Century in Color series begins with great impact: a full-color photograph of the mushroom cloud left by the atomic bomb that fell on Japan. Feinstein traces the decade's contrasting themes of fear and prosperity, unrest and comfortable materialism, and rebellion and conformity throughout chapters divided into five areas of focus: lifestyles, medical and scientific advancement, arts and entertainment, politics, and sports. The straightforward text flows easily and ably distills information into the brief, survey format. Young people may be particularly attracted to the nice mix of illustrations, which include photos of a family's bomb shelter and an aerial view of the expanding suburbs as well as images from film and advertising. An expanded time line offers more context, and the reading list provides good suggestions for research. Students seeking report material on the time period will find this a good starting place. From School Library Journal:
Grade 5-8-It's once over lightly for two pivotal decades of American history, with Feinstein hitting the "triumphs, tragedies, fads, and fashions." Taking a popular-culture approach, each book begins with a look at "Lifestyles, Fashion, and Fads," followed by arts and entertainment, sports, and then politics, with science, technology, and medicine coming last. The events of the 1940s and 1950s lend themselves to a lively treatment here, with black-and-white photographs appearing throughout. The books are visually exciting, and the texts are clear and vigorous. The author has created effective and appealing introductions to these important decades, but students doing reports will need to look further for sufficient information on specific events. The "A Cultural History of the United States through the Decades" series (Lucent) offers greater depth on these periods, and is also splendidly illustrated with photographs.
