When 23 year old Caroline Kraus arrives in San Francisco following the death of her mother, she is searching for connection to fill that void. In the dreamlike city of bookstores and coffeehouses, she meets Jane, a kindred spirit harboring her own troubles, and their brief path together will reveal both the power of attachment and the cost.
Gripping and unforgettable, Borderlines brings to life the author’'s close bond with her mother and the pivotal turning points of adolescent loss that prepared the ground for the collision with Jane that followed. At its heart lies an unflinching look at the dynamics beneath the surface of any intimate relationship—, and the blurring of boundaries that can occur. An extraordinary tale that illuminates the power of love, loss, loyalty, and grief, Borderlines marks a striking literary debut.

Greetings -- this is February, 2018, and I have just spent some time updating the information here about Borderlines, and replacing the outdated photograph of me with today's more accurate (and happier) version. The reason for my revisiting this author page today is I have just acquired back the rights to Borderlines, which means I can update the book with a new forward, afterward and a more appropriate cover, and share some of the experiences I had writing and publishing this story from the long view of almost twenty years later. Since publishing Borderlines I have continued writing and editing for a living, and I turned back to film, my original love. I created a documentary series called the Moments Of Truth Project, and in addition to an updated version of Borderlines, I look forward to publishing the first book in the Moments Of Truth Project series as well. From the Back Cover:
Advance Praise for Borderlines
“A riveting memoir that reads like a thriller––complex, wryly funny, and utterly compelling, the author's experience comes vividly to life as she weaves together narratives of past and present, of profound attachment and terrifying loss. Here is a story of a life unraveling; this could be Hitchcock, but the fact that it actually happened intensifies the horror of Kraus's story, and the relief we feel at knowing she survived. Borderlines marks a tremendous debut from a gifted writer.”
—Joyce Maynard, author of At Home in the World, To Die For, and The Usual Rules
“In Borderlines, Caroline Kraus has recreated a fascinating, complicated story of desire, loyalty, and grief. It’s the kind of book that captivates readers and inspires other writers. Don’t waste time reading this endorsement. Open the book and get started. The writing speaks for itself.”
—Hope Edelman, author of Motherless Daughters
