PreSchool-Squat, sturdy board books with a dreamy, New-Age mood. Happy uses trite, singsong rhymes to express feelings. "I feel sleepy/now it's time for bed./I feel safe/so I'll rest my little head." The emotional progression through a child's day shows love, joy, and sadness each attached to a simple action-being held, sung to, or left behind. My Little One imparts a warm and fuzzy view of "bedtime magic." "The angels dance/and fairies prance,/your dreams await, my little one." This text is more successful than the first, as it has a soothing, less formulaic approach and an emphasis on comfort and safety. Both books have a quiet mix of stuffed animals, stars, angels, hearts, and people, primarily illustrated in pastel acrylics, with softly patterned backgrounds that lend a sense of mellow consistency to the pages. Yet rather than establish a unified sense of story, the pictures provide only atmosphere. A child may be comforted by a smiling full moon or a singing angel, but there is little else of substance here.
