Born Howard Hoagland Carmichael on November 22, 1899 in Bloomington, Indiana, Hoagy Carmichael was a composer, pianist and singer whose melodies have delighted around the world. His jazz and popular compositions express the bittersweet nostalgia of the 1920's and 1930's in America. Hoagy Carmichael studied at Indiana University in the early 1920's and earned a Bachelor of Law in 1926. During those years he met Bix Beiderbeck, a jazz musician, and the two began to record and perform together.

His first song, Riverboat Shuffle was recorded by Beiderbecke and the Wolverines in 1924. In 1927 Hoagy Carmichael wrote the song most frequently associated with his name, Stardust. He soon came to know many jazz and popular musicians, including Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby and Rudy Vallee, and in his compositions he moved early from jazz to popular idioms. Among his best-known songs are Stardust, Georgia on My Mind, Lazy River, In the Still of the Night, Lazybones, Heart and Soul, Thanks for the Memory, and The Nearness of You. He also performed extensively on radio, television and in films. His songIn the Cool Cool Cool of the Evening from the filmHere Comes the Groom received an Academy Award in 1951. He wrote two memoirs, The Stardust Road (1946) and Sometimes I Wonder (1955).

Throughout his life, Hoagy Carmichael distinguished himself as an energetic, charismatic and innovative musician. He was awarded the honorary Doctor of Music by Indiana University in 1972 in recognition of his enduring contributions to the music world. He died on December 27, 1981.
