This is one of the very few works by Soviet writer that provides an honest portrayal of the life of Soviet foot soldier on the Eastern Front in World War II.Bykau's novel was res non grata for the former political commissar now at the helm of the country, and it was not until after the demise of the Soviet Union that the novel was published in its entirety.
