An anthology of some 30 poems, additional riddles and charms, from the eighth to the 11th centuries. Morgan (medieval and British literature and languages, Montana State U.) has faced the original Anglo Saxon with translations that attempt to maintain both the sound and rhythm of the original while making the meaning more comprehensible to readers of modern English. The result is not smooth modern English, but the purpose is to make Old English poetry accessible to beginning students. Some of the poems are familiar, such as The Dream of the Rood, The Battle of Maldon, Deor, The Seafarer, and Caedmon's Hymn, but others are less frequently studied; she makes a point of including two poems by women. The text is double spaced. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
