Maxine Trottier Maxine Trottier, award-winning author of numerous picture books, novels and non-fiction works, was born in Grosse Point Farms, Michigan, and moved to Canada with her family at the age of ten. Her inspiration as an author has often come from her ancestors -- French habitants and the Miami people. Maxine lives with her husband, William, in Port Stanley, Ontario. From Booklist:
Ages 4^-7. Eddie Wing's family is poor, so even though he dreams of silk kites, he cannot buy even a paper one. Each year, Old Chan devises a new and exciting kite-flying contest for the children in the neighborhood. This year, he decides to give a prize for the smallest kite. The day of the contest, children fly "tiny jewels of silk and paper," while Eddie must fly his imaginary kite. A girl wins the prize, but Old Chan has noticed Eddie, and he gives him a packet full of materials with which to make a kite. Later, the elderly man writes a poem about a boy who flies a tiny kite of dreams. The story is sweet and moving, and though some of the characters are stiffly posed, the oil paintings have energy. Oddly, kites are never really the focus of the pictures. Only in the endpapers do the patterns and shapes of kites fly free. Ilene Cooper
