About the Author:
Lorien Kite was born in Amsterdam in 1974. He grew up in Staffordshire and read Modern History at New College, Oxford. Since graduating in 1995 he has written eight books and numerous articles for children on history, ecology, geography, literature and music. He lives in London.

Sailing for Gold Mountain In 1848, gold was discovered in California. Rumors began to spread through China about a land of opportunity across the Pacific. The United States, and later Canada, became known as "Gold Mountain." Over two million people left China between 1845 and 1900. Most of the early emigrants were from Guangdong province in southern China, where the people had suffered from war, disease and famine. Emigrants traveled in small boats to Hong Kong. From there, some set out on the two-month journey to North America. Others went to Southeast Asia, South America, the West Indies, Australia, and New Zealand.
