Reviews

Grade 4-6-This brief time-travel fantasy is an unsuccessful offering for reluctant readers. In order to avoid his grandfather's boring stories of his youth as a resistance fighter against the Nazis, 12-year-old Max goes to the attic to retrieve his grandfather's scrapbook. From there he is mysteriously transported to World War II Norway where he helps the resistance fighters and meets his grandfather as a young man. Through his adventures, he gains a new respect for the man, an appreciation for his stories, and a greater sense of self-worth. The simple, fast-paced plot is encumbered by awkward writing. The pages are littered with clich?s, exclamation points, and shallow characterization. The first-person narration is perhaps the worst element. Max's allusions are at least 10 years out of date. No self-respecting preteen today aspires to be a "cool dude." Skip this one and lead readers to Jon Scieszka's "Time Warp Trio" series (Viking) or Jane Yolen's The Devil's Arithmetic (Viking, 1988).
