Grade 4-7. This collective biography brings together 14 20th-century individuals, featuring well-known names, such as Carl Sagan and Jane Goodall, and lesser-known figures, such as neurobiologist Rita Levi-Montalcini and geneticist Mathilde Krim. The mix of men and women is fairly even but all of the individuals are European or European-American. This debut issue in a projected series follows the same format as other Biography Today books: at least one black-and-white picture; biographical and career highlights, including awards; a direct quote or two; and a bibliography of readily available sources. Averaging 9-to-10 pages, the articles are readable, attractively laid out, and touch on important points that will suit assignment needs. Browsers will note the clear writing and interesting details. The name, general, and birthplace indexes include all issues of Biography Today, which might confuse users.?Bonnie Farrier, New York Public Library
