Grade 3-6-A solid introduction to America's leaders for beginning researchers. The chronologically arranged entries average about seven pages in length and contain information about each president's birth, education, marriage, and family; pre-presidential career; administration highlights; and post-presidential life. All have numerous portraits and photos, a famous quote, and a list of historical places and Web sites (three of which are repeated in every entry). However, there are no references for print resources. The large print and non-cluttered format make the text accessible. Important terms are in bold type and are defined in the extensive glossary. Appendixes provide electoral and personal facts in chart format and a time line that places the main events of each administration into historical context. Subject, birthday, and birthplace indexes are included. The text is objective, describing each president's strengths and weaknesses, but offers only limited historical analysis of his actions and legacies. Wyatt Blassingame's The Look-It-Up Book of Presidents (Random, 1992) offers similar information at about the same reading level, but Harris's book is more attractive.

Presidents of the United States is an exceptional source detailing presidents' lives. It begins with a basic overview of what the Presidency requires and a clear explanation of the method the United States ideally uses to elect a President. The remaining text is set-up chronologically by each President's term. The Table of Contents leads directly to each specific President. The language and style is written for readers ages 7-10, containing the most important biographical facts, political facts, photographs or paintings and social events. Description includes details of the president's family life as well as contemporary political issues. Details at the end of each entry point out historical sites and web sites that offer opportunities for further investigation. This reference gives detailed information in an easy and complete one-stop source. A 1999 Parents' Choice Silver Honor Winner. (Eileen Kuhl, Parents' Choice®) -- From Parents' Choice®
