Grade 6-9 ``Once upon a time there was a lad, with boyhood behind him and manhood close, who heard the call of the King to follow him to the Enchanted City. . . .'' The lad, Hero, heeds the call of the King, and so begin the adventures and challenges in Tales of the Resistance, a series of allegorical Christian stories which form the sequel to the author's Tales of the Kingdom (Cook, 1983). The writing is good and the tales are engrossing. Readers, however, should be forewarned that many fundamentalists will probably find this mystical, inner-city ``Dungeons and Dragons'' portrayal of Christ and Christianity objectionable. Stockman's colorful bordered illustrations, reminiscent of Trina Schart Hyman's fine work, add significantly to the feeling and tone of the book. Jerry Flack, Univ . of Colorado, Colorado Springs
