When, at age nineteen, Charles H. Spurgeon (1834-1892) accepted a call to the historic New Park Street Chapel in London, he began a ministry that lasted forty years and marked him as one of the most influential ministers ever. Within a few years, Spurgeon’s congregation moved to the newly built Metropolitan Tabernacle, where, twice each Sunday, six thousand people crowded in to hear him preach. Spurgeon ministered there continuously until he died. His Sunday sermons were taken down by stenographers and printed throughout England, cabled to New York and reprinted in leading U.S. newspapers, and translated into more than twenty languages. His legacy to evangelical Christianity is indicated in the title he is often given The Prince of Preachers and in the fact that, outside of the Bible, Spurgeon is published today more often than any preacher. The editor, Roy H. Clarke, is a retired international executive who has researched and studied the life and ministry of Charles Haddon Spurgeon. Since his retirement Clarke has published several books and has been ordained to the Christian ministry. He is co-pastor of Sawgrass Chapel in his home town of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
