In this trio of western stories, brought, together for the first time in book form, the reader is treated to Dawson's trademarks: adept plotting, rich characters, and exacting historical detail. "Hell's Half-Acre" pits cattle ranchers and sheep farmers into a range war that results in blazing tempers and guns. In "Sagerock Sheriff' an aging lawman is facing the worst test of his life when a man he believes innocent is accused of murder. A dating robbery of an entire cattle train is the fuel that fires the eerie title story.

Dawson--the nom de plume of Jonathan Hurff Glidden--wrote some 16 western novels and more than 120 short novels and short stories. This trio of entertaining tales includes " Hell's Half Acre," " Sagerock Sheriff," and the title story, all written prior to World War II. " Hell's Half Acre," a well-plotted switch on the familiar range-war formula, deals with the infighting and double-dealing between cattlemen when a syndicate wants to buy their ranches and raise sheep. In " Sagerock Sheriff," a veteran lawman and his longtime outlaw friend save an innocent young man from prison, return him to the girl who loves him, and nail the wealthy rancher whom the girl's father wanted her to marry. Finally, in " Ghost Brand of the Wishbones," a trainload of cattle is rustled when rancher Bill North is double-crossed by his partner. Between plot twists, double-crosses, and shootings, the hero meets and wins the heroine. Solid traditional genre fare. Budd Arthur
