9780786445073: Pan-African Chronology III: A Comprehensive Reference to the Black Quest for Freedom in Africa, the Americas, Europe and Asia, 1914-1929 (Pan-African Chronologies)

This third volume of the Pan-African Chronology set covers 1914 through 1929, a time of two seminal events: World War I and the Black Awakening. In World War I, people of African descent fought for both sides, earning distinction on the battlefields of France as well as in the jungles and deserts of Africa. The "Black Awakening," a period from 1919 through 1929, marked the dawning of global awareness of the contributions of African people to the culture of the world. The book is arranged by year and events of each year are grouped by region. It also has two special biographical divisions for W.E.B. DuBois and Marcus Garvey.

About the Author:

Attorney Everett Jenkins, Jr., made his intensive research and unique juxtapositional presentation style a trademark in his Pan-African Chronology series ("recommended for all libraries"--Library Journal) and his Muslim Diaspora series ("a useful reference work that is a delight to peruse"--Choice). He lives in Fairfield, California.

From Booklist:

This is the third volume in a work that seeks to capture the African experience throughout the world. The first volume, published in 1996, covers the years from 1400 to 1865, and the second, published in 1998, covers 1865 to 1915. The author, an attorney, also compiled The Muslim Diaspora, volumes 1 (McFarland, 1999) and 2 (McFarland, 2000).

A nicely written introduction is followed by three sections: "1914-1918," "1919-1924," and "1925-1929." The sections are divided by year, and within each year events are listed first under U.S., followed by other geographic groupings, and ending with additional listings related to key figures (W. E. B. Du Bois, Marcus Garvey) and "Related Historical Events." For the U.S., there are several subdivisions such as "The Civil Rights Movement" and "The Performing Arts."

The listings consist of brief bulleted items, often accompanied by a paragraph or several pages of explication. For example, for 1924, under the heading "The United States: Notable Births," one finds more than two pages on the life and writings of James Baldwin. The reader is struck by the large number of long entries on early African American baseball players, as well as the detailed information on battles in Africa during World War I. The year-by-year approach means that information on an individual such as Colonel Charles Young, the highest-ranking African American officer in World War I, is scattered throughout the volume, but the index is a help in pulling everything together.

There are many excellent resources on African American history, heritage, and biography, although not in the same chronological arrangement. This work's value lies in its broad perspective, looking at the African experience on all continents during the time period. However, the format is less than user-friendly. Although the years are clearly noted in running heads, other divisions are less easy to distinguish, making it easy for the reader to get lost. Recommended for libraries that already have the previous volumes or are seeking an inclusive collection in the subject area. RBB
