9780786449385: After the Vote Was Won: The Later Achievements of Fifteen Suffragists

Because scholars have traditionally only examined the efforts of American suffragettes in relation to electoral politics, the history books have largely missed the real story of what these women sought to achieve--and eventually did achieve--far outside the realm of voting reform. Though Stanton, Anthony, and Mott are certainly the best known figures of the woman's suffrage movement, all were dead more than a decade before women actually achieved the vote. Women like Alice Paul, Louisine Havemeyer, and Mary Church Terrell carried on their work, putting their campaign experiences to work long after the 19th Amendment was ratified. This book tells the story of how these women made an indelible mark on American history in fields ranging from education to art, science, publishing, and social activism.

About the Author:

Katherine H. Adams is a Hutchinson Distinguished Professor and chair of the English department at Loyola University New Orleans. Michael L. Keene is an English professor at the University of Tennessee Knoxville, teaching courses in professional communication and rhetorical theory.

From Booklist:

President Wilson tried to terrorize them through imprisonment and torture, but this only strengthened the resolve of the second wave of suffragists. Adams and Keene profile 15 of these intrepid women, including Helen Keller, Louisine Havemeyer, and Louise Bryant. After a detailed description of the horrors the suffragists endured while fighting for the vote, the authors discuss their later activities in the arts, education, writing, and political and social activism. People unfamiliar with the later suffragists might be surprised to see them identified as socialists and pacifists, and it is interesting to read about the women history has long been too silent about. Unfortunately, the book is too concise for in-depth coverage of each of the suffragists featured, and, although other suffragists are mentioned in passing, there are some notable omissions, including major writer Rheta Childe Dorr, Jane Addams, and Blanche Ames. However, Adams and Keene do cover significant yet overlooked suffragists, and the photographs enhance the content. In all, a useful supplemental text for public and research library collections. --Shelley Mosley
