9780786466214: The Dakota Peoples: A History of the Dakota, Lakota and Nakota through 1863

The Dakota people, alternatively referred to as Sioux Native Americans or Oceti Sakowin (The People of the Seven Council Fires), have a storied history that extends to a time well before the arrival of European settlers. This work offers a comprehensive history of the Dakota people and is largely based on eyewitness accounts from the Dakota themselves, including legends, traditions, and winter counts. Included are detailed analyses of the various divisions (tribes and bands) of the Dakota people, including the Lakota and Nakota tribes. Topics explored include the Dakotas' early government, the role of women within the Dakota tribes, the rituals and rites of the Dakota people, and the influence of the white man in destroying Dakotan culture.

From the Author:

Palmer is one-quarter Sioux. After the death of her father, she traced the path of her Native American family from their migration to the plains into the reservations This book was conceived when researching the family lineage. The tribal history was present, but it was fragmented -- found in bits and pieces. One paragraph dating back to the 1500s was located in original accounts of explorers; another paragraph gleaned from another text. Thus, it seemed the best way to honor the ancestors it was time to put the pieces back together again and create a comprehensive history that went back in time to the origins of the Dakota peoples. She settled in Kansas, well within the traditional tribal territory, where information was more readily available.

Since publication, the book is found in many college and tribal reservation libraries throughout the United States. For a writer, there can be no greater recognition from the First National Peoples than that.

About the Author:

Jessica Dawn Palmer lectures on American Indian topics and wildlife issues and is the author of more than 26 books. She is one-quarter Sioux. Formerly a reporter for the Roswell Daily Record in New Mexico, she has been permitted as a wildlife rehabilitator in Kansas, Florida and New Mexico. Recently, she moved to Colorado where she continues to write and hopes to continue her work with wildlife.
