Each quote gives the movie title, production company, year of release, speaker of the line, and, when appropriate, a comment putting the quote in context.

About the Author:

Robert A. Nowlan is a scholar, researcher, teacher, writer, storyteller and lecturer, and the author of two dozen books and numerous articles. He lives in New Haven, Connecticut, and Marco Island, Florida.

Gwendolyn L. Nowlan is a college professor living in New Haven, Connecticut. She has written several reference works.

Until now, the only sourcebook of movie lines in print has been The Movie Quote Book by Harry Haun (HarperCollins, 1980). With some 4,000 quotations organized under nearly 400 subject headings, it is dwarfed by Film Quotations' 11,000 quotations under more than 900 headings. Clearly, this new work is worth its space on the shelf--not only because it includes more quotations, but also so many more points of access to them. Since neither book has a keyword index, the number of subject headings is crucial. Another welcome feature is the number of cross-references within the subject headings: nearly every subject includes at least two alternative headings for the reader to check.

The pages of this book offer an immense variety of memorable movie lines under headings from Abilities and Capabilities to Youth. Under each subject heading, quotations are entered chronologically by the year of the film's release. If a section quotes more than once from a single film, the quotations appear in the order in which they occurred in the film. Each entry notes the name of the performer who spoke the lines, the film and its studio and release date, and a sentence or two explaining the context. In addition to this panoply of screen gems, there is an index of performers and one of movie titles, which also contains the names of each movie's director and writer.

Films considered classics and B movies are both represented in this compendium. The chronological coverage is broad, from the 1930s to the 1990s. As a source for some of the most common quotations we encounter every day, this book is a solid reference. Recommended for all film and general-reference collections.
