This is the first comprehensive reference work on America's Independence Day. Bringing attention to persons, places, and events of historical significance, the book focuses on the Fourth of July as it has been commemorated over the span of more than two centuries, starting with the first celebrations: public readings of the Declaration of Independence that occurred within days of its signing. Biographical sketches feature presidents (and how each celebrated the Fourth) and other politicians, famous soldiers, educators, engineers, scientists, athletes, musicians, and literary figures. Other topics include parks, monuments and statues dedicated on the Fourth; famous speeches and the personalities behind their stories; and general subjects of interest including education, abolition, temperance, African Americans, Native Americans, wars, transportation and holiday catastrophes.

About the Author:

James R. Heintze is librarian emeritus at the American University Library in Washington, D.C. He has written numerous articles, reviews, and several books on American music and culture.

From Booklist:

Historical newspaper reports appearing as early as July 5, 1776, are among the sources for this encyclopedia, lending a local flavor to national festivities and shedding light on the celebration over time. Proving that the Fourth of July is more than just a day off from work but a day for civic, social, and political as well as recreational activities, the volume documents numerous local, regional, and national events, including countless openings, unveilings, rallies, parades, barbecues, dances, reenactments, and inaugurations. Some examples are the ground breaking for the Ohio Canal in 1825; Fourth of July concerts hosted by popular musician Willie Nelson; and the July 4 naming of Independence Creek, Missouri, by Lewis and Clark during their expedition to the Louisiana territory in 1804. The historical and journalistic emphasis of the encyclopedia provides a special lens through which to view and further understand the meaning of the holiday, which pays homage to the signing of the Declaration of Independence (full text included in the appendix). Of note is the inclusion of many patriotic odes and poems as well as songs and hymns, such as "America the Beautiful," and "Hail, Columbia!" The entry "Star Spangled Banner" contains background information and a chronology of early performances. Other entries showcase famous speeches or provide brief sketches of presidents, politicians, educators, and others with links to the Fourth of July or the Declaration of Independence. Intended for a general audience, this is a good companion for Facts On File's The Glorious Fourth: An American Holiday (1989). Although it has a limited index and only a handful of black-and-white photos, it is recommended for public library and college reference collections. Kirby, Diana
