9780786670628: Mel Bay Sabicas

This book presents three challenging extended flamenco guitar solos by the legendary Agustin Castellon Campos, best known as Sabicas (1912-1990). The selections are: Bronce Gitano, Campina andaluza, and Duelo de campanas. Brief explanations of digitation symbols, flamenco tremolo technique, notation/tab conventions and use of the cejilla or capo are included. All of the music in this book appears in both standard notation and tablature. Juan de la Mata, the transcriber of the pieces in this book, enjoyed a 30-year professional relationship with Sabicas and is a seasoned performer in the flamenco style. He has preserved not only the notes, but the spirit and nuance of this music as Sabicas played it.

About the Author:

Mr. Juan de la Mata was born on February 28, 1918 in Madrid, Spain. Started to study the flamenco guitar at the age of six, and at age eleven acted in the Spanish theatre in Madrid. Graduated with a “professor” degree at the Real Conservatory of Music and Poetry of Madrid. He participated in more than forty movies, composing the music for his own performances. His first trip abroad was Portugal, and for more than a year, performed in theatre, radio, television and the Gran Casino of Estoril. Was invited by Mr. Juan and Mrs. Maria de Borbon to perform as soloist for the debut of their son Juan Carlos, currently the Majestic King Juan Carlos I of Spain. The famous and great artist Imperio Argentina (Magdalena Nile del Rio), hired Mr. de la Mata to go to Argentina to perform with her in theatre, radio. Television, and when she Had to go back to Spain, because someone very beloved passed away, she recommended Mr. de la Mata to the worldwide known dance couple “Rosario! and Antonio”. With Rosario and Antonia Mr. de la Mata performed in Argentina, Urguay, Chile, Peru, Brazil, U.S.A. (44 States), Canada, Spain, England, France, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Denmark, Italy, Israel and Eygpt (King Faruk Wedding). With Rosario and her Spanish Ballet he performed all throughout Europe, Algiers, Marocco, Tanger, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Peru and Brazil. With Ximenz-Vargas ballet he performed, as guest artist in Cuba, Puerto Rico, U.S.A. and Canada. In New York, Mr. de la Mata had the pleasure of meeting the genius and master of the flamenco guitar “Sabicas” (Agustin Castellon Campos 1907-1990), with whom he worked and performed for more than thirty years. Agustín Castellón Campos. Pamplona, 1912 - New York (United States), 1990. Guitarist. He was already a legend in life. He was proud of having done for the guitar what nobody had done before: to tour the whole world with it, make it fashionable and get a bit of classical from it. "The flamenco guitar had never been played outside Spain - the author explained in 1984 - and not everyone, a very little. Then, since my records came out in the last thirty years, people became fond of the flamenco guitar anywhere in the world". He did not consider himself a follower of any guitar school, of any influence. "I have never had teachers. A proof of this is that I have a brother for whom I have never been able to set a single variation. I do not know how to teach, so I do not give lessons, because I was never taught by anyone. I do not know where to start. I do not know music". He acted in films. The mastery of Sabicas has brought the greatest praise. Thus, Howard Klein: "His art has no ! superfluous attitudes. It does not make one feel he is playing, but rather the music just flows spontaneously". Or Brook Zern: "Sabicas has everything necessary: a mysterious technical precision, astonishing speed, a perfect tone and absolute understanding of flamenco, of its structure and if its intonation. Moreover, he has a great ability to invent".
