Presents piano theory with technical and creative ideas to enhance your keyboard knowledge and improvisation skills through practical approaches and applications. To benefit most from this book, you should already be comfortable with reading notation on the grand staff and should have an understanding of written rhythms. Each step-by-step lesson has ideas to practice, which may appear in the form of exercises, suggestions, or mixed with theory, prompting you to be creative. Through these lessons, you will discover how to become a more creative player with chords in a rhythm section setting, going beyond just playing what is written on the page. You will also learn how to utilize scales in improvisation. This book has been designed to help beginners and intermediate students build a strong foundation and enlarge their horizon, and to help advanced players fill in gaps in their skills.

Steven Goomas holds the degrees of an M.A. in Composition, a B.A. in Piano and Theory, and California State Teaching Credential and an A.A. in Fine Arts. He is an accomplished composer and a B.M.I. writer and publisher in which he produces and arranges music that is used for films, popular television shows and commercials worldwide. Steve has recorded thirty-six CDs to date in a variety of styles including Pop, R&B, Rock, Metal, Country, Jazz, Classical, Funk, Rap, Latin, and different ethnic genera. As a keyboardist, he has had the pleasure to work record or tour with several artists such as Donna Summer, Carole King, Deniece Williams, Donald O'Connor, Carol Lawrence, The Four Tops, Frankie Valle and the Four Seasons, Mary Wells, Crystal Lewis, Steve Taylor, and is still actively performing as a "working musician." Steve has also taught music in the California educational systems at primary, secondary and college levels. Currently he is the Recording Arts Professor at Los Angeles Harbor College. He regularly works at home in his L.A. recording studio on various CD projects to help support his habit for acquiring new music gear, surfboards, and the feeding of his two Rottweilers. Steve's inspiration in writing his book was first developed from his many years of studying with great teachers in private situations and garnering their knowledge. He wanted to share some of their insights, which, in some cases, never had the chance to be published. Another reason for creating this book was to help the students Steve has had the awesome privilege to meet throughout the United States while being a musical director for Maranatha in their Worship Leader Workshop seminars and teaching clinics in keyboard and synthesizer techniques, arranging and rhythm section playing. These clinics have been ongoing for several years and have been heavily supported by the Roland Corporations for their keyboards. The final impetus for the completion of this book was because of the tremendous guilt Steve felt after putting away the first draft in a closet and ignoring the task of finishing it, which caused increased tension to mount every time he passed by, until finally one day God said, "Now is the time."
